Life in Cyprus

Your first week in Cyprus: registering a SIM, setting up utilities, and the two numbers you need

Prepaid SIMs now must be registered to your ID or they are cut off; electricity goes in your own name with a refundable deposit; and the tax number and social-insurance number are two different things. The practical setup.

Costs, indicatively (third-party figures drift — confirm on the operator's site): prepaid combos run roughly €10–€20 a month for 50–200 GB with EU roaming, postpaid €14–€28. Home fibre is around €30–€35 for 100 Mbps, up to about €55 for a gigabit line, with installation typically within 3–10 business days.

Electricity is supplied by the EAC (Electricity Authority of Cyprus). Open or transfer an account at any EAC customer service centre with your title deed or rental agreement and your ID or passport; a transfer of supply also needs the previous customer's written consent. Expect a small transfer fee and a refundable guarantee deposit — roughly €75–€350, depending on whether you own or rent and, for tenants, on residency status (non-EU tenants tend toward the higher end). A new connection takes about one to two weeks.

Which utilities are the tenant's responsibility and which the landlord's is set by your lease — confirm the split in writing before you sign (see the housing guide).

The rest of the practical setup — SIM registration by status, culture and the working calendar, getting around without trains — is in the daily life guide.
