Cyprus non-dom status: what it exempts, for how long, and the 2026 fine print
Non-dom exempts a Cyprus tax resident from the defence contribution on dividends and interest. Here is what that is worth after the 2026 reform, the 17-year limit, and the paid extension whose application window has already closed.

Non-domiciled status is the reason a lot of people look at Cyprus at all, and it is also one of the most over-sold parts of the picture. It is real and worth having — but only for specific income, only if you are actually a Cyprus tax resident, and only for a set number of years. Here is what it does and does not do.
First, non-dom is not a way to become a tax resident — it is something you claim once you are one. You still have to establish Cyprus tax residency the normal way: more than 183 days here in a calendar year, or the 60-day rule if you meet all of its conditions. The full mechanics are in the tax residency guide.
What it exempts: a Cyprus tax resident who is non-domiciled pays no Special Defence Contribution (SDC) on dividends, interest and rental income. The 2026 reform independently abolished SDC on rents for everyone, so the practical value now sits in dividends and interest.
The 17-year limit: anyone who has been a Cyprus tax resident for 17 of the last 20 years becomes deemed domiciled and loses the exemption. Non-dom is a long runway, not a permanent status.
How you claim it: non-dom status is declared on Form TD 38, filed the first time you earn SDC-relevant income, after which the Tax Department issues a non-domicile certificate. A Cyprus accountant or tax adviser will confirm the current form and whether your income actually benefits.
