Container, groupage or air
The choice comes down to volume. These break-points are indicative — the exact crossover depends on the route, the season and the carrier, so get quotes for your actual volume.
- Groupage (shared container, LCL)
- Priced per cubic metre, so it wins for roughly 2–13 m³ — a part-load that shares a container with others. The trade-off is time: your goods wait for the container to fill.
- Full container (FCL)
- A flat rate, so it usually wins above about 13–15 m³ even if the container is not full. A 20-foot container roughly suits a one- or two-bedroom household, a 40-foot one a three- or four-bedroom home.
- Air / excess baggage
- Fastest but the most expensive per kilo — only sensible for a few boxes where speed matters. For anything more, sea groupage is far cheaper per unit of volume.
Indicative door-to-door transit from the UK or EU: a full container by sea around 3–6 weeks, groupage 5–10 weeks (the consolidation wait is the main variable), air freight 1–2 weeks. Add one to two weeks for customs clearance and final delivery.
Duty relief on your used household goods
The relief sits in EU Regulation 1186/2009, and Cyprus applies it through Form Απ.2 and a 2024 official guide. The conditions:
- You must have had your normal residence outside the EU for a continuous period of at least 12 months before the move.
- The goods must have been in your possession and used for at least 6 months before you left.
- They must be brought into Cyprus within a window of 6 months before to 12 months after you transfer your residence — it can be in several consignments.
- For 12 months after import, the goods may not be lent, hired out, pledged or disposed of without notifying customs and potentially paying the duty. (Stated at EU level; the Cyprus form words it differently.)
"Personal property" covers household effects, bicycles and motorcycles, private cars and trailers, caravans, pleasure craft, household provisions, pets, and portable instruments for your trade or profession — used items in normal quantities, not commercial stock. You apply on Form Απ.2 at any Customs District Office with proof of your residence change and a packing inventory. The parallel VAT relief applies under the EU VAT rules.
What you cannot bring in
Prohibited outright: narcotic and psychotropic substances, counterfeit and pirated goods, counterfeit currency, and certain automatic firearms.
Restricted, needing a permit or licence:
- Firearms and air weapons above roughly 4.5 mm — a permit from the Chief of Police; rifles and automatic, semi-automatic or repeating shotguns are restricted.
- Products of animal origin and many foodstuffs — meat, fish, cheese, milk, honey, canned food, sausages — need a licence from the Director of Veterinary Services (baby food is generally excepted).
- Plants and endangered species — CITES and protected-species permits.
- Medicines — a permit from the Health Ministry.
The €10,000 cash rule
"Cash" is defined broadly: banknotes and coins, but also bearer-negotiable instruments like cheques and traveller's cheques, prepaid cards, and gold coins or bullion. Unaccompanied cash — sent by post, courier or in cargo — can be subject to a disclosure declaration on request within 30 days, and authorities may hold it until it is declared. The rule comes from EU Regulation 2018/1672.
Timeline of the move
This lines up with the relocation checklist — the checklist tracks your personal to-dos, this is the shipping-specific version.
About three months out
Get three or more removal quotes and compare full-container, groupage and part-load. Check the firm belongs to a recognised network (FIDI/FAIM, BAR Overseas) and carries proper insurance. Confirm your transfer-of-residence relief eligibility and start gathering proof of your residence change. Book the shipping slot.
About one month out
Finalise a detailed, valued packing inventory — you need it for both customs and insurance. Declutter and separate anything restricted or non-shippable. Complete Form Απ.2 and assemble the supporting evidence. Notify utilities, banks and authorities, and arrange mail redirection.
First week in Cyprus
Be reachable for customs-clearance questions and delivery scheduling. Declare cash of €10,000 or more at the border. On delivery, check every item against the packing list and photograph any damage for the insurance claim before you sign.
